The Importance of Self-Care During the Winter Months

By Lizzie Campbell, Assistant Spa Manager at The Spa at Hatherley Manor

As the days get shorter and the chill sets in, we can all start to feel that shift in energy. Winter naturally encourages us to slow down: to rest, recharge, and find warmth in life’s little moments. But if you’re anything like most of us, this is also when things get busier! The to-do lists grow, our routines tighten, and before we know it, self-care slips quietly to the bottom of the pile.

From my experience in The Spa, I’ve learned that self-care in winter isn’t just a lovely extra, it’s essential. It helps your body stay balanced, your mind stay calm, and your spirit stay nourished through the darker months.

Go With the Season’s Flow

Nature doesn’t rush in winter…it restores. The trees slow down, the earth rests, and really, so should we. Our skin and bodies feel the change of season too, often becoming drier, more tired, and in need of a little extra TLC.

Taking a few extra minutes each day to look after yourself makes such a difference. Try massaging in a rich body balm after your shower, lighting a candle in the evening, or sinking into a warm bath at the end of a busy day. Choose scents that make you feel grounded and cosy, I love lavender, cedarwood or rose for creating that calm, spa-like feeling at home.

The Healing Power of Touch

There’s something so special about the power of touch, especially in winter. A massage doesn’t just ease tight shoulders, it gets your circulation moving, boosts your immune system, and releases those feel-good endorphins we all need a little more of this time of year.

Even one treatment can bring back that sense of balance in body, mind and soul. But you can also create mini spa moments at home: take a few slow, deep breaths, do a gentle morning stretch, or sit quietly with a warm cup of tea. It’s often the smallest rituals that have the biggest impact.

Nourish, Hydrate, Restore

Wellness really does start from within. In the winter months, hydration and good rest are your best friends. Choose nourishing, warming foods: soups, herbal teas, root vegetables and drink plenty of water to keep your glow from the inside out.

At The Spa, I always see how hydrating treatments, from deeply nourishing facials to full-body rituals like scrubs and wraps, can help restore what the cold takes away. Think of it as giving your skin and your spirit exactly what they need to feel replenished

Create Your Own Winter Rituals

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. It’s the consistency that makes the difference. Maybe it’s a morning stretch before work, a weekly soak in the bath, or a monthly spa visit to unwind completely. These little rituals can turn winter from a draining season into a restorative one.

So this winter, slow down, rest deeply, and be gentle with yourself.
When you nurture your own wellbeing first, everything else naturally falls into place.
